Com Catch up - The last Shuttle Mission Sept 18-22, 1944 September 18 FO 577A. Major Marshall led the 355th FG’s largest single force deployed during WWII – a maximum effort ramrod, "FRANTIC VII Dash One" to support the 95th BG, the100th BG and the 390th BG on their mission of mercy to Warsaw. These three 3BD bomb groups comprised the Second Task Force and carried 1,248 large canisters of food, medical supplies, and ammunition intended for the Polish Resistance. The 355th put sixty four Mustangs, including ‘loaners’ from the 4th and 361st FG’s plus four spares into the air for the mission as sole escort from Stettin Poland to the Ukraine for the first leg. Lieutenant Colonel Stewart led the Group at lead of 354FS, taking off at 0813, but a bad generator forced him back shortly after crossing the Channel. Major Marshall, acting as the mission deputy at the head of the bastard Borax Squadron, pulled his squadron to the lead position and Major Lenfest assumed command of the 354FS. Majors Elder and Sluga led the 357th and 358FS as the Group headed toward the rendezvous point near Koszalin on the Baltic Sea. About half way to Stettin, the bombers were picked up on C-channel and they reported they were running about 15 minutes late. Rather than orbit around the rendezvous point for and attract unwelcome attention, Marshall decided to slow down and conserve fuel. At the next radio contact, the bombers indicated that they were now about 15 minutes early. Marshall had to quickly plot an intercept course to pick up the Forts on the other side of a large weather front between Stettin and Torun and still have enough fuel to complete the escort. Additionally, the 355th no longer had the luxury of bypassing a couple of large flak concentrations and received a heavy and accurate barrage over Stettin. Several 358FS Mustangs were damaged. Lieutenant Hoffman was wounded in the arm but managed to complete the mission. The Group picked up the B-17s near Torun at 1145 hours.... ere most of the bombers were located. After planning the next day's mission with the bomber Task Force leader, Colonel Karl Truesdell, Marshall flew back to Piryatin. The complicated dispersal of bombers to Poltava and Mirgorod was dictated by the Luftwaffe's spectacular success on the first Shuttle Mission, June 21st, when many of the B-17s and some P-51s were destroyed on the ground at Poltava. September 19 through 21 FO 577B. After briefing the Group, Marshall took off to carry the 355th Operations Order to the bomb group commanders at Poltava and Mirgorod, and then returned to lead the fighters on the second leg of their epic journey. The target for the day was the marshalling yard at Szolnok, Hungary. This target was requested by the Soviets to disrupt the flow of Axis resources to the front. Six Mustangs stayed in Russia because of various problems, but 56 Mustangs left Piryatin at 0953 hours. Major Hovde led the 358FS when Sluga's P-51 lost a generator and he had to stay behind until it was replaced. Rendezvous with the three groups of B-17s was made at 1330 near Horodenka, Poland and escort continued over Czechoslovakia, Rumania, and Hungary. The bombing of the marshalling yards at Szolnok was described as ‘excellent.’ Near Brod, Yugoslavia, the low group of B-17s was bracketed by heavy and accurate flak but no ships dropped out of formation. The task force continued to Italy with no further incident. The 355th broke escort between Brod and Doboy and proceeded to Foggia area airfields in Italy. The force was scattered over three bases around Foggia but everybody was down by 1600 hours. The pilots toured the local areas for the next two days. The hosting 15th AF Fighter Group’s crew chiefs were derisive about the condition of the 355th Mustangs, but worked day and night to bring them into shape for the final leg home. ![]() ![]() |

Âîò ÷òî ïî ýòîìó ïîâîäó ïèøåò Äàíà Áýëë: Synthetic Haze Paint was an attempt to get similar results in a more practical manner. "The team (Lockheed) mixed a new blue base paint of a deep sky tone which they called 'Sky Base Blue.' Next they tinted a synthetic haze enamel, Flight White, to a color they named 'Flight Blue.' An F-5A was then sprayed Sky Base Blue with coats of Flight Blue in shadow areas and lighter coats on the sides. Äàíó Áåëë ÿ óâàæàþ, íî èç äðóãèõ èñòî÷íèêîâ ïðèâûê ñ÷èòàòü, ÷òî íà ôàáðè÷íûõ ðàçâåä÷èêàõ íèç ýòî Base Blue, à âåðõ ýòî Sky Blue. Ìîæåò ÷èòàë ïëîõî. Ñõåìà îêðàñêè äëÿ èñïîëíåíèÿ òÿæ¸ëàÿ Íå òàì âñå ñèëüíî ñëîæíåå. Èçíà÷àëüíî îêðàñêà Haze Blue íàíîñèëàñü ñëåäóþùèì îáðàçîì: âåñü ñàìîëåò öåëèêîì êðàñèëè â áàçîâûé ÷åðíûé, à ïîòîì íàíîñèëàñü ñîáñòâåííî Haze (ñïåöèàëüíûé êîëëîèäíûé ðàñòâîð îêñèäà öèíêà â ìàñëå) ñëîÿìè ðàçíîé òîëùèíû. Íà âåðõíèõ ïîâåðõíîñòÿõ ñàìûé òîíêèé ñëîé, íà áîêîâûõ ïîâåðõíîñòÿõ òîëùå, è ñàìûé òîëñòûé ñëîé íà íèæíèõ ïîâåðõíîñòÿõ. Ñîîòâåòñòâåííî íèêàêîé ãðàíèöû ìåæäó îòòåíêàìè íå áûëî à áûë ïëàâíûé ãðàäèåíò îò òåìíîãî âåðõà ê ïî÷òè áåëîìó íèçó. Èäåÿ áûëà òàêàÿ, ÷òî ïîâåðõíîñòü áóäåò îòðàæàòü òîëüêî ñèíèé è ôèîëåòîâûé öâåò, à îñòàëüíûå áóäóò ïîãëîùàòüñÿ áàçîé, â ðåçóëüòàòå ñàìîëåò íà ôîíå ñèíåãî íåáà ñòàíîâèòñÿ íå âèäèìûì. Òàêàÿ ñõåìà áûëà î÷åíü òÿæåëà â îêðàñêå, è íå ñòîéêîé â ýêñïëóàòàöèè. Ïîçæå ïåðåøëè íà Synthetic Haze - òåìíî-ñèíÿÿ áàçà è â çàòåíåííûõ îáëàñòÿõ Flight Blue - ñìåñü synthetic haze enamel è áåëîãî. Äîáàâëåíî ñïóñòÿ 12 ÷àñîâ 45 ìèíóò 56 ñåêóíä: Ìîæåò âñ¸-òàêè òóïî öåëèêîì â àíãëèéñêèé "ïî ðóáëþ" ïîêðàøåí, êàê è ìíîãèå äðóãèå F-5? â ñïåöèàëüíûõ ìîäèôèêàöèîííûõ öåíòðàõ, òàì æå è êðàñèëèñü Íó è êîíñïèðîëîãè÷åñêàÿ âåðñèÿ. ×òîáû íå ìîðî÷èòüñÿ ñî ñëîæíîé äâóõöâåòíîé ÷åðò¸æíîé îêðàñêîé ïî Ëîêõèäó, òî÷íî òàê æå êàê ïîçæå öåëèêîì ïåðåêðàøèâàëè â RAF PRU Blue, âçÿëè äà è çàêàòàëè ýòîò Dot Dash öåëèêîì â àíãëèéñêèé æå RAF Deep Sky. Î÷åíü óæ ïîõîæå íà òî. Ïðÿì î÷åíü-î÷åíü. |
