Ïî ñåìó,íà ñâåò Áîæèé áûëà èçâëå÷åíà ñòàðåíüêàÿ êîðîáî÷êà Ìàò÷áîêñà ñ âîæäåëåííîé ìîäèôèêàöèåé çíàìåíèòîãî èñòðåáèòåëÿ(àëüòåðíàòèâû-òî âñ¸ ðàâíî íåò) è ñîñòàâëåí ïëàí ðàáîò.Äàáû õîòü íåìíîãî ïðèáëèçèòü ìîäåëü ê ñîâðåìåííûì òðåáîâàíèÿì áûëî ðåøåíî èçãîòîâèòü èíòåðüåð êàáèíû,ñäåëàòü íîâûå íèøè øàññè è ñàìè øàññè,âûïóñòèòü ïîñàäî÷íóþ ìåõàíèçàöèþ(ñïîéëåðû è çàêðûëêè),äîðàáîòàòü ïîâåðõíîñòè óïðàâëåíèÿ,èçãîòîâèòü ÁÀÍÎ,ïåðåøèòü ìîäåëü è íàêàòàòü êë¸ïêó,çàìåíèòü âñþ ìåëî÷¸âêó.

À íà êàêèå ìàòåðèàëû îïèðàëñÿ àâòîð ìîäåëè?Äèñêóññèÿ èçâåñòíàÿ. I have emailed the editor of Aeroplane to hopefully correct this. The 12 and 14 were the same length at 49' 11". The error in
the article is even more surprising because following a similar letter to Aeroplane some time ago Phil and Tony (Authors) contacted me and then changed some of the text in their new book.

Meteor Night fighters.


The overall length of the Meteor NF.Mk.14 is almost always quoted in both major and minor publications and on most published drawings as being 51’ 4 and the text often includes a statement on the lines of “the NF.14 had an even longer nose”. I found this is not correct and that virtually all published drawings and length data for this aeroplane are wrong.

At some time an error of 17 inches has occurred in dimensioning the NF.Mk.14 and this myth has been perpetuated time and time again.

The first Night Fighter Meteor was the NF.11 which used the British radar AI.10 and was 48’ 6” long. This was followed by the Mk.12 and the first Night Fighter to use the new American AI 21 (ARI 5860) radar. To accommodate this new radar, the nose was made 17” longer ( than a NF.11 and in the process it lost the under nose scanner bracket fairing) becoming 49’11” long. Note: the NF.13 is a tropicalized Mk.11 with no dimensional change.

NF Mk.14’s were also fitted with the AI 21 and were identical in length to a NF.Mk.12 at 49’ 11” not the oft published 51’ 4”, This is confirmed by Air Publication AP 2210P vol 1, the only differences, being the new blown canopy and a servo operated rudder. At some point someone has added 17” twice. No NF. Mk14 was 51’ 4” long. 17 inches is nearly 3/8ths of an inch or 9mm in 1:48 scale. The 12 and 14 both had the same increase in fin area to compensate for the nose extension.

The NF.Mk. 14 nose looks longer than the Mk.12 as it has a shorter steeper windscreen and shorter engine nacelles (the bigger bore Derwent 8 intakes are cut back in length).

In service the length of some Mk.12’s and all Mk.14’s became shorter at 49’ 8.5” when a passive tail warning radar R3697 was fitted, and the pointed tail cone was removed. Later in service as navigation trainers NF. (T) Mk.14. it sometimes occurred that when the redundant radome’s tatty di-electric was re-painted gloss black the first metal mounting ring was also painted giving the illusion of a longer radome.

As a consequence of this new information, as far as I am aware, most Meteor NF.14 drawings and/or data are in error with the exception of an early Aeromodeller drawing those published length is correct.

I have also been able to check the aluminium evidence by measuring Mk’s 11, 12 and three different Mk.14's thanks to our small volunteer Air museums.

Îáùàÿ äëèíà Ìåòåîð NF.Mk.14 ïî÷òè âñåãäà óêàçàíû â îáîèõ îñíîâíûõ è âòîðîñòåïåííûõ èçäàíèÿõ è íà áîëüøèíñòâå îïóáëèêîâàííûõ ðèñóíêîâ êàê 51 '4, à òåêñò ÷àñòî âêëþ÷àåò â ñåáÿ çàÿâëåíèå íà ëèíèÿõ èç «NF.14 áûëî åùå áîëüøå íîñ ". ß íàøåë ýòî íå ïðàâèëüíî, è ÷òî ïðàêòè÷åñêè âñå îïóáëèêîâàííûå ÷åðòåæè è äàííûå äëèíû äëÿ ýòîãî ñàìîëåòà ÿâëÿþòñÿ íåïðàâèëüíî.

 êàêîé-òî ìîìåíò îøèáêà 17 äþéìîâ ïðîèçîøëî â îïðåäåëåíèè ðàçìåðîâ NF.Mk.14 è ýòîò ìèô áûë óâåêîâå÷åí ñíîâà è ñíîâà.

Ïåðâûé íî÷íîé èñòðåáèòåëü Ìåòåîð áûë NF.11 êîòîðûé èñïîëüçîâàë áðèòàíñêèé ðàäàð AI.10 è áûëî 48 '6 "äëèííûå. Ýòî ïîñëåäîâàëî Mk.12 è ïåðâûé íî÷íîé èñòðåáèòåëü, ÷òîáû èñïîëüçîâàòü íîâûé àìåðèêàíñêèé À.È. 21 (ÎÐÈ) 5860 ðàäàð. Äëÿ ðàçìåùåíèÿ ýòîãî íîâîãî ðàäàð, áûëî ñäåëàíî íîñ 17 "áîëüøå (÷åì NF.11 è â ïðîöåññå îí ïîòåðÿë â âîçðàñòå äî íîñà ñêàíåðà êðîíøòåéí îáòåêàòåëÿ) ñòàíîâèòñÿ 49'11" äîëãî. Ïðèìå÷àíèå: NF.13 ÿâëÿåòñÿ òðîïè÷åñêîå Mk.11, íå èçìåíåíèå ðàçìåðîâ.

Í.Ô. Mk.14 áûëè òàêæå îñíàùåíû ÈÈ 21 è áûëè èäåíòè÷íû ïî äëèíå â NF.Mk.12 íà '11 "à íå ÷àñòî, îïóáëèêîâàííûõ 51' 4" 49, ýòî ïîäòâåðæäàåòñÿ âîçäóõà ïóáëèêàöèè À.Ï. 2210P îá 1, òîëüêî ðàçëè÷èÿ, áóäó÷è íîâûì âåòðîì íàâåñ è ñåðâîïðèâîä ðàáîòàåò ðóëü.  êàêîé-òî ìîìåíò êòî-òî â äâà ðàçà äîáàâëåí 17 ". Êàê ñëåäñòâèå ýòîé íîâîé èíôîðìàöèè, íàñêîëüêî ìíå èçâåñòíî, áîëüøèíñòâî ðèñóíêîâ è / èëè äàííûå Ìåòåîð NF.14 ïî îøèáêå, çà èñêëþ÷åíèåì ðàííåãî Aeromodeller ðèñóíîê, îïóáëèêîâàííûõ äëèíà ïðàâèëüíî.

ß òàêæå áûë â ñîñòîÿíèè ïðîâåðèòü àëþìèíèÿ äîêàçàòåëüñòâà ïóòåì èçìåðåíèÿ 11, 12 è òðè* ðàçëè÷íûõ áëàãîäàðÿ Mk.14 â ÌÊ íà íàøèõ ìàëåíüêèõ äîáðîâîëüöåâ íåáîì.

drawings matched the 51' 4" dimension published in everything from Janes AWA, to Putnams and the Dumpy Book of Aircraft. So back to Newark for a full survey. 49' 11"!!! I spoke of my findings to Alan Hall in one of my regular conversations with him. Was Newark's 14 an oddball. Alan spoke to Derek James the Putnam's Gloster historian, who said I was mistaken. Not to be beaten, another friend Tim Kershaw checked out the Jet Age Mk.14..49'11"... The Ex Ferranti one at

Edinburgh...49' 11", so was the Newark NF.12. Then another friend W.A.Harrison loaned me the Mk.14 AP Vol.1 'Bingo'.. 49' 11".

From that point I ceased to take published aircraft dimensions for granted,
